The research was conducted by a team from the University of Kentucky and Louisiana State University. Their findings were published in JAMA Network Open [1].

The research analyzed 1,200 cereals introduced in the United States between 2010 and 2023 [1]. The aim was to see how the ingredients and nutritional values changed over this 13-year period.

As mentioned above, the biggest increases were seen in salt and fat, with the researchers calling these the “most pronounced increases” of all [1].

Carbohydrate content rose from 26 grams in 2010 to almost 33 grams in 2023. While carbohydrates are an important part of a diet, breakfast cereals will often have refined carbohydrates – which tend to be unhealthy [1].

Additionally, sugar content had a moderate increase from 2010 to 2022. However, in some positive news, there has been a slight dip in sugar levels since 2022 [1].

What impact will this have on Canada?

Given the close trade and proximity to the US, such developments inevitably impact Canada. This impacts health professionals like dentists and the consumers themselves.

There is an additional consideration for Canada, due to the upcoming front-of-pack labelling (FOPL) rules which will be introduced from 1st January 2026 [2].

These rules will make it clear on food products when there are high levels of fat, sugar, and salt. The hope is that this will deter people from purchasing unhealthy food.

But even before this is introduced, Canada is already well-positioned in terms of safeguarding its citizens, to an extent.

Professor Sylvain Charlebois of Dalhousie University explains that “Canada tends to be a bit more conservative when it comes to food regulations” [2].

Continuing, Charlebois says that “while the US is seeing these sugar, fat, and sodium levels creep up, we’re starting to push back” [2].

It is positive that Canada is moving in the right direction, and hopefully the new FOPL rules will make a further positive difference.

Another benefit is that formulations of the same cereal can change, dependent on where they are based. So while we may see the same brand of cereal in the US and Canada, they may have different ingredients.

Many cereals that we see on grocery store shelves are produced by multinational companies, which often have a presence in both the US and Canada.

As Charlebois points out, this has the benefit of allowing companies to “tweak formulations depending on local regulations or consumer preferences” [2].

Furthermore, he says “for example, Canadian versions might have less sugar or slightly different vitamin fortifications” [2]. But he does caution that they will be largely similar.

There are also strict rules on advertising to children in Canada, meaning that some high-sugar foods cannot be advertised to them.

Positive steps

Overall, the good news is that Canada appears to have strong safeguards in place, which is helping to protect the health of the nation.

But there are some positive signs from the US, which should hopefully have a positive knock-on effect on rest of the world. Efforts are seemingly being made to cut sugar levels across the board on food and drinks.

This is predominantly due to US Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has called sugar “poison” [3].

Kennedy has been leading the fight to change the nation’s food regulations and ending the childhood obesity problem. He is aiming to “Make America Healthy Again” [4].

His dislike of food dyes, ultra-processed foods, seed oils, and food additives has won him some support [4]. This ongoing effort will hopefully lead to sugar levels dropping in cereals and other foods.

This is especially useful for cereals, as it is often children that eat cereals, so having a high sugar meal at the start of each day is unhealthy. It impacts both physical and oral health.

Charlebois also commented on Kennedy’s impact, saying that “if someone like RFK Jr. pushes hard on school food reform and it gains traction, cereal brands will adapt — reformulating, rebranding, or even reducing sugar in kid-focused products” [2].

Continuing, he says that “Canada might not drive that change, but we’ll definitely feel the impact” [2]. Therefore, things do seem to be moving in the right direction.

The American Dental Association is also urging the Department of Health and Human Services to strengthen research on the link between sugar and oral health problems [2].

The report found that preventive approaches towards oral problems could achieve a 30% reduction in tooth decay for those aged 12-65 [1].

Interestingly, the report also found that tooth decay disproportionately affects those with low income.

The impact of tooth decay

The report found that tooth decay causes a significant economic burden. For example, the lifetime costs across all 40 nations are estimated to be $977.9 billion [1]. This is a staggering amount.

The report suggests that improving oral health through improved education and access to preventative care could reduce lifetime tooth decay costs by $196 billion [1].

But the authors state that such actions cannot be achieved solely by dentists. Instead, they argue that countries and governments need to act. Improving access to a wider range of oral professionals, like hygienists, can also help [1].

Tooth decay and other oral health problems also cause a wider problem, including their subsequent impact on physical health problems.

For example, the report found that better management of gum disease could prevent 57 million cases of type 2 diabetes worldwide. Moreover, this would generate around $250 billion in economic gains over approximately 10 years [1].

Now, a new trend has emerged. This trend involves users promoting the action of filing their teeth to achieve a straighter looking smile [1].

This often involves people using a nail file to file jagged edges off their teeth [1]. While this may seem innocuous to some, it is actually very risky.

Filing teeth unprofessionally often results in enamel either being exposed or even destroyed. This can lead to the nerves becoming exposed.

This can become a dental emergency and will cause excruciating pain for anyone. Moreover, the damage is often only reversable through expensive treatments.

Dentists and filing teeth

Why Is the Alberta Dental Association Calling for an Alberta-Only Provincial Dental Plan?

The Alberta Dental Association has called for an Alberta-only provincial dental program to be launched. They believe that the current system of the Canadian Dental Care Plan and the existing provincial program have major shortcomings. They have put forward a few reasons why they believe a new system would be effective and improve the oral health of Albertans.

The ongoing rollout of the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) has put a spotlight on oral health in Canada.

The CDCP has helped many people, and in some cases, has worked well alongside and complimented existing federal and provincial dental programs.

However, the President of the Alberta Dental Association (ADA) has recently suggested that both the CDCP and existing programs have major shortcomings [1].

Therefore, the ADA have argued that these shortcomings need to be addressed. In fact, the ADA is calling for a made-in Alberta provincial dental plan [1].

They have put forward a few reasons why they believe this would be effective, and how it addresses the problems they have identified [1].

Calls for made-in Alberta Plan

As mentioned, the ADA have suggested that there are shortcomings in the CDCP. This opinion has been put forward by their President – Dr. Hans Herchen [1].

Therefore, Herchen has called for a made-in Alberta provincial dental plan. The ADA suggest that this plan would build on the strengths of the existing provincial dental program, addresses its gaps, and integrates funding from the CDCP [1].

Herchen has said that the ADA wish “to draw attention to the fact that both federal and provincial dental programs have a lot of administrative challenges,” and that there is a need to “resolve that red tape” [1].

Continuing, Herchen says that “we can provide better care on budget for patients in Alberta” [1]. The ADA have put forward several reasons to explain why they are advocating for a new, Alberta-specific, dental plan.

The CDCP undermines employer-based insurance

The first reason put forward by the ADA revolves around a perceived interference from the CDCP on employer-based insurance [1].

Currently, many Canadians receive dental insurance through their employer. However, a third of people living in Canada did not have insurance as of 2023 [2].

Therefore, existing federal and provincial programs aim to help those without coverage. But the ADA have suggested this model may not be sustainable.

There have been long-term concerns from many that the CDCP could result in employers stopping dental benefits. This could have a negative long-term impact.

Herchen has said that “the biggest risk factor with [the] CDCP is the damage to the existing dental insurance plans, the employer-based plans” [1].

Continuing, Herchen says that the ADA are “very concerned that the well-served population will be losing their excellent dental plans, replaced with a less sufficient provincial or federal plan” [1].

Potential to improve the existing Alberta provincial dental plan

The ADA have pointed out that there are some strengths of the existing Alberta provincial dental plan [1]. If these strengths are leveraged, it could negate the need for the CDCP.

However, Herchen does say that provincial dental plans need to be “modernized,” due to being outdated and limiting [1].

Herchen mentioned that there are “a large number of Alberta dental patients that are currently underserved by provincial dental plans” [1].

This problem has been impacted too by the problem of struggling to recruit dental hygienists and assistants in Alberta.

Herchen believes that a better-structured provincial dental plan could attract more dental workers [1]. This would provide more choice and supply for patients.

Potential benefits of opting out of the CDCP

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has previously announced that the province will be opting out of the CDCP from 2026 [3].

The ADA have also supported opting out of the CDCP. The belief is that this will enable Alberta to have a more effective and efficient provincial program [1].

This would mean that Alberta residents would no longer have access to the CDCP. But such a system would enable the Alberta government to receive the same federal funding that had been allocated to the CDCP [1].

Moreover, Herchen has suggested that this would offer “better coverage for Albertans,” whilst also lowering costs for taxpayers [1].

Tailoring solutions to Alberta’s demographics

As with any large country, different towns and cities will inevitably have different demographics. Alberta’s demographics are unique in Canada.

Herchen points out that Alberta “has a very large young population” [1]. This burgeoning population has driven a higher demand for dental services.

However, Herchen noted that the CDCP targets the older demographic. Therefore, he has suggested that the CDCP isn’t relevant for many people in Alberta.

This means that an Alberta-only plan could better tailor services to Alberta’s specific demographics. For example, services could be based more on those in demand by the younger population of Alberta.

Funding concerns

Finally, there are some funding concerns with the CDCP, which threatens its long-term sustainability. This is impacted by political, economic, and social factors.

Federal elections are already scheduled, with concerns around what will happen if the Conservative Party secure power. It has been speculated that funding for the CDCP could be stopped.

Indeed, Herchen says that “there is a lot of politics” involved [1]. Furthermore, he has pointed out that the CDCP’s fee increase for 2025 has not kept up with inflation.

Herchen also said that “most people’s experience with government programs is that they become increasingly restrictive over time” [1]. Clearly, Herchen has a range of concerns about the long-term feasibility of the CDCP.

Summary

These various reasons underline the ADA’s rationale for wanting an Alberta-only dental plan to exist. It could have a positive impact on the oral health of Albertans.

Final CDCP Expansion Confirmed: How Will It Help Cut Er Visits and Improve Healthcare?

In an exciting announcement, it has been revealed that the Canadian Dental Care Plan is due to expand into its final phase. Therefore, all eligible Canadians will be able to access care under the plan from May. This should result in improved oral health for Canadians and less emergency room visits.

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is set to expand into the final phase – meaning that it will open up to all eligible Canadians, irrespective of age, health, or other circumstances.

This update has been welcomed by the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association (CDHA), due to the significant benefits it should have to the oral health of Canadians [1].

Moreover, the CHDA has said that they believe the expansion of the CDCP will cut emergency room (ER) visits and ease the strain on the healthcare system [1]. Therefore, the expansion offers many benefits.

The update

Canada’s Health Minister Kamal Khera announced that the CDCP will begin accepting applications from its “largest cohort” of eligible patients from May [2].

This “largest cohort” refers to those aged 18 to 64 who hadn’t previously been eligible for the plan. This represents a huge number of people, and will mean that the CDCP becomes fully rolled out.

The rollout of the plan began in December 2023. Since then, the CDCP has been rolled out in a phased approach, with seniors, children, and people with disabilities prioritized [2].

While this final phase had originally been expected earlier this year, the new announcement has confirmed that the expansion’s final phase will happen in May [2].

Due to the huge cohort, the final phase will in itself take place in phases. From 1st May, Canadians aged 55 to 65 can apply, followed by those aged 18 to 34 on 15th May. Then, those aged 35 to 54 can apply from 29th May [2].

Therefore, by the end of May, everyone who meets eligibility for the CDCP will have access to care. In fact, for those approved, coverage could begin as early as 1st June [2].

The CDCP is securing strong participation. For example, 98% of dentists, denturists, dental hygienists and dental specialists in Canada are offering services under the plan [2].

During the announcement, Khera confirmed that around 1.7 million Canadians have been able to visit a dentist or oral health professional [2]. Khera said that stories emanating from the CDCP suggest the plan has been “life-changing” for some [2].

Continuing, Khera suggested that the CDCP is “helping people regain their self-confidence, sense of dignity, and improving their overall health” [2].

CDHA’s reaction

The CDHA represents dentists and dental hygienists across Canada. They campaign for improved oral health for Canadians. The CDHA has applauded this update.

The federal government expects an additional 4.5 million people to become eligible in the month of May – marking a substantial increase in those eligible for the plan [2].

They have highlighted this as an example of the government’s commitment towards “affordable, accessible and preventive oral healthcare” [1].

CDHA President Alexandra Sheppard released a statement, where she praised the update, whilst also emphasizing the economic benefits in light of rising healthcare costs [1].

Sheppard says that “the broader issues of access to oral healthcare and the financial burden of oral diseases and conditions on the healthcare system must be addressed” [1].

With this in mind, the burden of oral diseases extends to ER visits. Visits to emergency rooms for dental problems puts considerable strain on the healthcare system.

For example, figures show that ER visits for preventable dental issues were estimated to cost at least $31 million in 2017 – which equated to $513 per visit [3]. Such figures aren’t sustainable.

People will often visit the ER for dental pain out of desperation. If they have been unable to receive or afford care from a dental clinic, they may resort to visiting an ER.

Therefore, this adds pressure to an already stretched healthcare system. But the plan’s expansion should mean that such visits lessen.

The CDCP’s expansion should offer people more chances to visit a dental clinic. In theory, this should eliminate any need for ER visits for dental concerns. This will hugely benefit the healthcare system.

CDHA president Sheppard commented that dental professionals “see first-hand the direct, positive impact of investments in oral healthcare by the federal government” [1]. The CDHA are certainly pleased with the update.

Summary

This update is positive for many people. The expansion will enable greater numbers of people to receive desperately needed oral healthcare. Moreover, it will lessen the pressure on the current healthcare system.

Hopefully the plan’s expansion will aid the oral health of millions of Canadians. With over 4 million people expected to become eligible for the plan, it is likely to be very beneficial.

While the update is exciting, there has been some concern that a federal election could change the plan. If a federal election is called and the Conservatives win power, it has been speculated that they may seek to stop the funding.

But for now, there are plenty of positives with this update. Many have been waiting a long time to receive care, and with May just around the corner, the wait will be over shortly.
