What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

If you’re in pain or you’ve damaged a tooth, it’s worth a call. Dental problems rarely improve on their own, and getting seen quickly can mean the difference between saving and losing a tooth. Contact us right away if you’re experiencing any of the following:

  • Severe or persistent toothache
  • Cracked, chipped, or broken teeth
  • A knocked-out (avulsed) tooth
  • Dental abscess or infection (swelling, fever, bad taste)
  • Lost filling or crown
  • Bleeding gums or soft-tissue injuries
  • Swelling in the face or jaw

Not sure if it’s an emergency? Call us anyway — we’ll help you decide whether you need to come in now or whether it can wait, at no cost to ask.

Common Emergencies & What to Do Before You Arrive

A few simple steps in the first minutes can protect your tooth and ease your pain on the way to our clinic. Call us first, then:

  • Knocked-out tooth — Pick it up by the crown (not the root), gently rinse without scrubbing, and try to place it back in the socket. If you can’t, keep it in a cup of milk and get to us within the hour — time is critical for saving it.
  • Broken or chipped tooth — Rinse your mouth with warm water, save any pieces, and use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling.
  • Severe toothache — Rinse with warm salt water and gently floss to remove any trapped food. Over-the-counter pain relief can help; place a cold compress on the outside, never aspirin directly on the gum.
  • Dental abscess or swelling — Rinse with mild salt water and call us right away. An infection can spread, so this shouldn’t wait.
  • Lost filling or crown — Keep the crown if you have it. You can cover the exposed area with dental wax and avoid chewing on that side until we see you.

Our Emergency Dental Services

We use advanced diagnostic tools, including digital X-rays, to quickly find the source of your pain and treat it the same day whenever possible. Our emergency care includes:

  • Fast pain management — relief from severe toothaches and infection
  • Tooth extractions — for badly damaged or infected teeth
  • Root canal therapy — to save a natural tooth where possible
  • Temporary & permanent restorations — re-cementing crowns, replacing fillings
  • Treatment for abscesses and infection — to stop pain and prevent spread
  • Sedation for anxious patients — so even nervous patients stay comfortable

What to Expect When You Arrive

  1. Call ahead — Tell us what’s happening and we’ll get you booked, often the same day, and advise you on what to do in the meantime.
  2. Rapid assessment — When you arrive, we examine the area and take digital X-rays to pinpoint the problem quickly.
  3. Immediate pain relief — Our first priority is making you comfortable and stopping the pain.

Emergency Dentistry FAQ

How quickly can I be seen?

In most cases, the same day. We hold appointment time open every day for urgent care, so when you call with an emergency we do everything we can to see you right away. The sooner you call, the sooner we can relieve your pain and protect the tooth.

What counts as a dental emergency?

Severe or lasting tooth pain, a broken or knocked-out tooth, swelling, a dental abscess, a lost filling or crown, and any bleeding or injury to your mouth all warrant prompt care. If you’re unsure, call us — we’ll help you decide whether you need to be seen immediately.

What should I do before I arrive?

Call us first for guidance. For a knocked-out tooth, keep it in milk and come in within the hour. For pain or swelling, rinse with warm salt water and use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek. Save any broken pieces or a lost crown and bring them with you.

Do I need to be an existing patient?

No. We welcome both new and existing patients for emergency care, including patients whose regular dentist isn’t available. Just call us and we’ll get you booked.

How much does emergency treatment cost?

It depends on what’s causing the problem and the treatment needed. After we assess you, we explain your options and costs upfront — no surprises. We work with most insurance plans and can discuss financing so cost never stands between you and relief.

Will you treat my pain on the first visit?

Yes. Relieving your pain is our first priority. We assess the problem, make you comfortable, and treat what we can the same day. If further work is needed, we’ll plan it with you before you leave.

Do you offer sedation for anxious patients?

Yes. We offer sedation options to help anxious and nervous patients stay relaxed and comfortable throughout emergency treatment. Let us know your concerns when you call and we’ll plan your visit around them.
